  1. Why did you choose a career working with children?

Initially, I had aspirations of becoming an accountant, a professional cricketer, or even joining the military permanently as I was an officer in the infantry corps for a couple of years. Injuries also curtailed my cricketing dreams and while I enjoyed accounting, I knew that an office job was not for me.

Teaching materialised as an option much later in my career decisions.

As I stepped into the classroom, I discovered a passion for education that I hadn’t anticipated. The challenges and rewards of guiding students sparked a sense of purpose in me, transforming my unexpected career choice into a fulfilling journey. Now, I find joy in shaping young minds and making a difference, proving that sometimes the paths we least expect can lead to the most meaningful destinations.

  1. Your career until now

I started teaching in a very underprivileged school, and that experience shaped my future career. I gained so much insight into what really matters in education: it’s about opportunities. After that, I taught for several years at a school where I had been a former pupil. Going back to the school that gave me so much felt incredibly rewarding, and I was excited to give something back. When an opportunity arose to move into independent education, I jumped at the prospect. I was fortunate to obtain a position at a leading boy’s independent school in South Africa which ultimately gave me the chance to further my career in the UK.

  1. Your favourite subject at school?

My first love has always been sport and the incredible opportunities it offers. Being part of a team is great for bonding and meeting new people. I have always been very competitive and thrive on challenges. I also enjoyed Geography, which likely ignited my passion for travel. Accountancy and Maths came naturally to me, and I truly relish the challenges they presented. I enjoy solving problems that involve numbers.

  1. Your favourite children’s book? and why

One of my favourite books is Jock of the Bushveld, a heartwarming tale by Sir James Percy FitzPatrick. Set in the rugged landscapes of South Africa, it follows the adventures of Jock, a brave and loyal dog, and his master, who is a passionate hunter. The story beautifully captures the bond between them, highlighting themes of friendship, loyalty, and the spirit of adventure. Jock's exploits through the bushveld are both thrilling and poignant, making it a timeless read that resonates with anyone who loves animals and the great outdoors. As all my pupils know, I love telling them stories about my own exploits in the African bush. I do not think one ever tires of experiencing the great outdoors and I encourage all my pupils to broaden their horizons through travel and adventure. One of my teachers once told me that ships are safe in a harbour but that’s not what they are built for. Taking risks is all part of the journey!

  1. Most memorable moment of your teaching career

As a proud teacher, there’s nothing more rewarding than watching my pupils achieve great success in the sporting world and beyond. Seeing them represent South Africa in rugby and play cricket for England fills me with immense pride. These young athletes have shown remarkable dedication, discipline, and passion for their sports, and it’s inspiring to witness their hard work pay off on such prestigious stages. Knowing that I played a part in their educational and sporting journey, encouraging their talents and supporting their dreams, brings me joy. Their achievements not only reflect their personal commitment but also highlight the importance of perseverance and teamwork—values I strive to instill in all my pupils.
