Why Micklefield?

People visiting Micklefield for the first time often comment on the warm, inviting atmosphere and the lovely interactions between the children and staff.

Capturing the essence of a school is tricky. How to do justice to the feeling you get when you walk around? How to describe the warmth in the hundreds of daily interactions between staff and children? How best to express the care, commitment and unwavering concern of staff without sounding cliched? How to document the thought that goes into each child’s learning or the quiet glow of self-esteem and self-belief when a new skill is mastered?

When we asked parents what they most value about Micklefield, six key themes emerged which we call the Micklefield Magic:

  • For families - In addition to our strong family ethos and partnership, we support you practically with a flexible, extended day (07.30 -18.00). There is even a homework club which alleviates some of the pressure on family time at home. Situated just a 4-minute walk from Reigate train station with plenty of parking nearby, our location helps you juggle family logistics.
  • Part of the Reigate Grammar School (RGS) family - Being part of the RGS family means your child can transfer to RGS senior school without the need to sit an exam (instead their progress is closely tracked). Academically, we punch well above our weight as a small, non-selective, independent school. Our 11+ programme ensures that those wishing to transfer to another senior school are successful and well prepared for their next step.
  • Making learning fun - The pressure on children from modern living is well documented. The antidote to pressure? Fun. Wander around school or any of the outdoor learning areas and you will hear gales of laughter as teachers engage their charges in memorable lessons. Your child would be forgiven for thinking they were simply having fun. We know they are cementing learning, developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills whilst developing that all important love of learning.
  • Small class sizes - With average class sizes of 20, we get to know your child well and hence can develop meaningful, child-centred learning. Our school is small enough that your child will feel seen and heard, and large enough to provide opportunities for all in sports and performing arts. Micklefield is the sort of school which notices that your child is not doing any clubs, and on finding out that none appeal adds one that does.
  • No outsiders - One of the greatest gifts you can give a child is a sense of belonging. As a non-selective school, we work hard to ensure everyone feels included. Ask one of our peer mediators how they are trained to help others find solutions which everyone thinks are fair. Talk to a Year 2 ‘red cap’ (playground helper identifiable by a red baseball cap) about how they encourage others to join in. Listen to a ‘wellbeing champion’. Attend an assembly on neurodiversity. Admire the worry box and ‘chat zone’ areas where children can write down a worry or request a one-to-one conversation with a trusted adult.
  • Future ready - We want your child to leave us equipped with all the skills they need to succeed in later life. Alongside the softer skills embedded through our values, it is important that your child is digitally fluent, at home with the latest technological advancements, inspired by the possibilities. We innovate and invest in IT and the iPad programme as much as we encourage risk taking, creative thinking and pursuing your dreams.

"Small, inclusive and a strong family vibe, this prep school is a great option for those who believe values are as important as academics" Muddy Stilettos
