Year 1 ventured to The Rural Life Museum in Farnham, where they immersed themselves in a variety of Victorian child experiences. The day began with the children dressing up in period costumes before the school bell rang for the start of the day. They learned about the strict routines and rules of the Victorian classroom… thankfully, the “Victorian teacher” was a little more smiley than a real life one!
The children found out about the various jobs a Country Child would undertake, such as scaring the birds, sowing seeds on the farm, collecting eggs and cleaning up after the chickens. They learned about bedtime routines that included going to bed with a candle, a chamber pot and sharing a bed with 3 other siblings – an eye-opening experience for them all!
The day was rounded off with a fun trip on a steam train around the museum site which was a great treat for everyone. The Year 1 teachers were very proud of all of their children’s behaviour and enthusiasm throughout the day – well done Year 1!
