Kicking off our Global Superheroes Theme Week, we were delighted to welcome ‘Bird Man’ to Micklefield School. His visit aimed to stimulate children's interest in the marvels of nature and highlight the importance of conserving wildlife and their habitats.
Bird Man educated the children on a wide range of subjects, including life processes, food chains, camouflage, flight, predator-prey relationships and habitat destruction. The children were treated to amazing flying demonstrations with three incredible birds:
Cyril the Harris Hawk: Weighing approximately 1kg, Cyril showcased his impressive talons. The children learned that Harris Hawks can eat up to half their body weight in one go, lay four eggs a year, which take 86 days to hatch, and are fully grown in only 14 weeks.
Shadow the Bald Eagle: The largest of the three birds, Shadow weighed around 4.5kg and was an impressive spectacle of a bird. The children discovered that Bald Eagles eat fish, which they catch with their rough-textured feet that act like Velcro.
It was a spectacle to see the children's excited reactions as the birds flew around the gym, swooping over their heads.
