Year 6 were treated to an inspiring visit from Dr Kulendra - a Veterinary Surgeon and Parent - who helped launch Year 6's new Science topic: Evolution & Inheritance.
During his talk, he explored a fascinating range of ideas, including:
The evolution of the domestic dog
How physical adaptations improve an animal’s chances of survival
The impact humans have had on domestic species
The links between phenotype and disease
The children were then challenged to apply their new learning by designing a treatment plan for Charlie, a dog with damaged bone tissue - a task they approached with great enthusiasm and creativity.
Mr Kulendra also shared insights into the ever‑evolving world of veterinary medicine, highlighting exciting advances such as 3D printing and innovative new materials used in modern treatments.
Alongside the Science, he spoke powerfully about wellbeing and the relevance of our school values in adult life. He reminded pupils that setbacks are not failures but opportunities to learn, demonstrated how a simple ‘Power Pose’ can boost confidence and showed how the values we practise in school continue to matter far beyond the classroom.
We are hugely grateful to Dr Kulendra for giving up his time to deliver such an enriching, relevant and relatable session. A special thank you also goes to Arthur, who proudly assisted with the presentation to his class.
