Today, the Micklefield community came together to celebrate RGS Global Village Day, embracing the diversity, cultures and connections that make up our global RGS family.
The day began with an inspiring whole-school assembly led by Mrs Faupel, who shared thought-provoking insights from If the World Were 100 People. Children were encouraged to reflect on the rich variety of cultures, traditions and experiences that exist across our world and to appreciate how these differences strengthen and enrich our global community.
A special highlight of the assembly was a stunning performance by our Year 5 and 6 Dance Club. Performing to Mountain by Sam Ryder, the dancers showcased beautiful handcrafted fans created by Upper School pupils and incorporated dance styles inspired by different cultures across the RGS international school network. The performance was a wonderful celebration of creativity, collaboration and global connection.
Throughout the day, children across the school explored different cultures through a range of creative art activities.
In the Lower School, pupils embarked on a colourful journey around the world, learning about the flags of our sister schools in Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Turkey, the UAE and the UK. Inspired by the vibrant colours of the flags and the work of contemporary artist Damien Hirst, the children created eye-catching spin paintings using salad spinners. The excitement and anticipation as each unique masterpiece was revealed brought plenty of smiles and demonstrated the joy of creative exploration.
Meanwhile, Upper School pupils drew inspiration from the traditional Vietnamese art of fan dancing. Using their knowledge of colour theory, the children carefully blended colours to create beautiful ombré effects across individual fan petals. These were then assembled into large decorative fans, similar to those used in traditional Vietnamese performances. The finished creations were both striking and elegant, showcasing the children’s artistic skills while introducing them to a new cultural tradition.
Global Village Day has provided a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to learn about, celebrate and appreciate the diverse cultures that connect our worldwide RGS school community. Through art, dance and discussion, children have explored what it means to be part of a global family of schools, while recognising the similarities and differences that make each culture unique.
